I remember that! This is a "Tavern Novelty Candle" of Santa in his Sleigh from the Socony Vacuum Oil Company, still in the box, unlit. Doesn't ring a bell? After the Standard Oil of New York (SOCONY) merged with Vacuum Oil Company in 1931, they became Sacony Vacuum Oil. Pretty infamous, even back then. Now, we know this company as ExxonMobil. The Socony-Vacuum Oil Company of Los Angeles hired Franklin Gurley to start making a whole line of vibrant decorative candles for them. During the late 1930s and 1940s, these candles were sold at Woolworths and also at the famous department store, Macy’s. That is just the history of the company and hardly has anything to do with Santa and his innocent sleigh, speeding through the skies in the 1940's and powered by reindeer, not oil :) These candles are still beloved by Christmas collectors...this one has its original box and bottom label and is in amazing shape for a 1940's candle! Because they were so cute, most people didn’t want to burn them and ruin their appearance. (If you need to have this one shipped, insurance will be included in shipping and handling to your zip code.) Heavens to Betsy Vintage = $40.00 HIP price = SOLD! All items are shipped via USPS unless otherwise noted above. If you'd like to propose a different method of payment, shipping method or price contact us at shop @ houseinprogress.net. |
