Way up north, at one of the farthest points in Alaska, is Teller. In the year 2000, the population there was 268 people. Teller is incredibly far north and west on the map of Alaska. You could imagine taking a canoe through Port Clarance and across the Pacific to the Soviet Union from there. Very few members of the native community have survived there...today, there are only 64 families and no more artists in the tribe living here. Little remains of the original Eskimo village established in 1900. From that town, comes this handsome scrimshaw bracelet. Carved ivory and pieces of polished black baleen are fitted together with taut string to follow the natural curve of the wrist. The carvings tell the story of the artist's life in Alaska at that time. Kayaking, whale, polar bear, seal, sea lion, white whale, birds...all played out against the background of the cliffs of floating ice. There is a place for a clasp to be added. The artist's signature is on the back. A beautiful piece of primitive Native Alaskan art.
